Dorothy Alma Voigt Costello
Dorothy Alma Voigt Costello passed away at the age of 101 on July 31, 2010 at the Belle Reve Assisted Living Center in Milford, PA under the care of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. She was born on September 18, 1908 in Hawley, Wayne County, Pennsylvania to Arno Constantine Voigt, M.D. and his wife, Elizabeth Loretta Shanley of keystone Street, Hawley. She was also the stepdaughter of Rachael Davies Voigt and Eleanor Croop Voigt. She was the great great granddaughter of Samuel Voigt and August Ackerman of the Kingdom of Saxony and Texas, the granddaughter of August Voigt and Emilie Margaretha Ott Voigt of Hawley and Honesdale. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles James "Cos" Costello in 1972. She resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Edward S. Nikles at Twin Lakes for over 17 years.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Arno Voigt and George Voigt, M.D. and a sister, Janet Voigt Silverman. She is survived by a sister in law, Katherine Chapman Voigt of Hawley, PA.
Surviving are her daughter, Beth Eleanor Costello Nikles and her husband, Edward S. Nikles of Twin Lakes, Shohola Twp., PA, and two sons James Voigt Costello of Brooklyn, NY and Dan Thomas Costello and his wife, Katherine Dallas Costello of Mountaintop, PA.
She is survived by her six grandchildren, Edward Daniel Nikles and his wife, Denise Lynn McAllister Nikles, of Milford, PA; Diane Julia Nikles Chudoba and her husband, David Paul Chuboda of Milford, PA; Toby Lynn Costello Landon and her husband, James Landon of Kingston, PA; Erik Costello of Brooklyn, NY; Douglas Costello of Mountaintop, PA and Dr. Andrew B. Costello and his wife, Jamie Grey Costello of Carlisle, PA.
She is also survived by her eight great grandchildren, Eileen Elizabeth Nikles and Colin Edison Nikles of Milford, PA; Jenna Catherine Chudoba and Abigail Julia Chudoba of Milford, PA; Samantha Grey Costello; Reilly Alexander Costello and Noah Katelyn Costello of Carlisle, PA and Connor Thomas Costello of Mountaintop, PA.
She is further survived by nieces and nephews, Mark Silverman of Windemere, FL; Clay Voigt of VA; Jane Voigt of VA; Robert Costello, Sharon Costello, Thomas Costello and Terry Costello, all residing in NJ. She was predeceased by a niece, Elizabeth "Sis" Voigt of Peekskill, NY and nephew, Arno Voigt of Arkansas.
Surviving cousins include P. Richard Monaghan of Forest City, PA; Elizabeth Monaghan of Hawley, PA and "Bud" Croop of Saratoga Springs, NY.
Dorothy graduated from the Hawley High School in 1926. She was further educated at Bloomsburg State Normal School (now Bloomsburg University). She was an accomplished pianist and harpist and attended the Julliard School of Music in New York City where she further studied the harp. For some years she played the harp with the symphony in Port Jervis, NY.
She co-owned and operated the Cos-Mid Inn (now known as the Windy Dog) located at Twin Lakes, together with her late husband Charles Costello from 1946 to 1973.
There were seven separate birthday celebrations held in honor of Dorothy's 100th birthday in 2008, and she actively participated in each one. She was an accomplished and award winning quilter and gifted many of her works to family members.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Teeter Funeral Chapel in Hawley, PA. A service will be held on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Shohola, PA. Internment will be held at the convenience of the family at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Hawley, PA.
