John H. Ruschmeier
BURLINGTON, NC — John H. Ruschmeier, 93 died quietly Sunday November 21st 2010 at Alamance Healthcare Center in Burlington NC after a brief illness.
A native of Brooklyn, NY he was the son of the late Mary Gatje Ruschmeier and the late William H. Ruschmeier, Sr. and beloved husband the late of Alice Duggan, his wife of 60 years, who passed away in 2004.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the U.S.S. Griffin a sub tender in the South Pacific during WWII. He often spoke fondly of his time in the Navy, and proudly watched his son, and grandson graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in later years. After raising three children in Queens, NY, he and his wife retired to the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. In 2005 John and Alice moved to NC to be near their daughter.
One of John's proudest moments was when he was presented with his high school diploma by Mayor Talley of Elon in October 2008, and was featured on the front page of the Times-News. He loved the Brooklyn Dodgers, and never missed viewing the annual Army-Navy game, and his happiest moments were when he was surrounded by his family.
John was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Burlington, NC, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 74 years.
He is survived by his son Stephen Ruschmeier and wife Elizabeth of Annapolis, MD, daughters Alice Love and husband Patrick of Graham, NC, and Irene Bennet of Rochester, NY. In addition he leaves six loving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
John's frequent performance of "God Bless America" will be missed at Alamance Healthcare. He enjoyed singing for all who would listen.
The family wishes to thank the loving and caring nurses who cared for John at Blakey Hall and at Alamance Healthcare Center. Words cannot express how much gratitude we have for those who dealt with dad daily. Thanks to Judy Simmons of Blakey Hall who fulfilled his dream of a high school diploma. Thanks to the Newman Club of Elon University and the ministry at Blessed Sacrament Church which ministers to the homebound. The people of Alamance County showered him with kindness in the past few years.
