Edward Thomas Purcell, Sr.
Edward Thomas Purcell, Sr. of Barryville, a retired insurance agent for Van Vleet Insurance Company and a 50-year area resident, died Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 81.
Son of James P. and Eva Fischer Purcell, he was born on February 26, 1920 in Corona, Queens.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving as a first lieutenant during World War II and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the American Legion; the Yulan Fire Department; a lifetime member of the Lions Club; and a pitcher for the Yulan Braves baseball team in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys at home; two daughters, Kathleen Beard of Jacksonville, FL and Virginia Lane of Freeport, ME; three sons, James of Barrington, RI, Edward T., Jr. of Dover, NH and Timothy of Sarasota, FL; three brothers, John E. of Glastonbury, CT, James of Fripp Island, NC and Andrew of Alpharetta, GA; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by daughter, Margaret.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Ann’s R.C. Church in Shohola, PA. The Rev. David Cramer officiated. Cremation took place at the HG Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, PA.
