The Rev. Edward F. Barrett
The Rev. Edward F. Barrett died at his home on Friday.
Father Barrett, son of the late Thomas A. and Gertrude S. Mulally Barrett, was born in Scranton on Feb. 5, 1932. He received his early education at Nativity Grammar School and South Scranton Catholic High School. Father Barrett graduated from the University of Scranton in 1956. He completed his studies for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md., and was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1961, in St. Peter's Cathedral, Scranton, by the Most Rev. Jerome D. Hannan, D.D., late Bishop of Scranton.
Father Barrett was assigned as an assistant pastor at St. Ann's, Shohola; St. Peter's, Wellsboro; Holy Cross, Scranton; St. Patrick's, Wilkes-Barre; St. Patrick's, Olyphant; and St. Patrick's in White Haven. He also served the parishes of St. Francis of Assisi in West Hazleton, St. John the Evangelist in Pittston, and Immaculate Conception in Scranton. In addition to his parochial duties, Father Barrett was the district deputy of the 29th District, Knights of Columbus. He retired from active ministry on July 1, 2007.
He is survived by a brother, Robert, Scranton.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Alice.
Viewing will take place at Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., Scranton, today from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a Solemn Vesper Service at 7, with the Reverend Philip A. Altavilla, V.E., Northern Regional Vicar presiding.
A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Rev. Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Monday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
Funeral arrangements are being provided by the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, Linden Street, Scranton.
